about

the hot hatch comparisonator is a bit of a hobby, a bit of a test bed and generally just a useful little tool for the would be hot hatch purchaser. it is a matt bell project, and as such, is simple to use, looks nice and uses WordPress for it’s inner workings.

are you going to improve this any?

as a matter of fact, yes I am. new features will include more specifications, more vehicles, more photos and an information page for each vehicle. don’t ask me when i’m planning on doing this. until it proves it’s commercial value, it will remain a hobby.

i know a car that should be on the list

get in touch. i may have missed that one.

i like this comparisonator. can i have it?

yes you can. if you are happy to pay for it. this is a testing version which has been designed to work for hot hatches. however, a commercial version would allow you to set all the specifications, giving you the flexibility to compare many different types of product/service/plan and the list goes on. contact me to discuss your requirements.

i’m a nerd and would like to know some technical details about how you made this

i can’t give away all my secrets but in general:

  • cars are stored as posts in WordPress and use hidden custom fields, administrated by a custom post panel.
  • cars are requested via AJAX and the JSON returned by the server is interpreted by jQuery and the cell contents replaced with lots of tasty car data
  • the car images are store by the Post Thumbnails feature of WordPress. If you aren’t currently using this in your templates, it’s never been a better time to start. your clients will thank you.

i want to advertise on your site

that’s the spirit. get in touch and we can sort something out.
